"...in view of the low number of severe outcomes in newborns being observed in Canada, as well as the uncertainty about the potentially adverse effects of maternally derived antibodies on lowering the infant’s response to immunization with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine, routine immunization with Tdap vaccine in pregnancy was not recommended at that time. With the availability of new effectiveness data reported following the implementation of routine maternal immunization programs internationally, the NACI Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis/Polio/Haemophilus Influenza B Working Group (PWG) was again tasked with reviewing the evidence pertaining to the use of Tdap vaccine in pregnancy. In accordance with the direction that was provided by the Canadian Immunization Committee, the objective of this NACI Statement is to provide guidance on maternal immunization in pregnancy as a strategy to reduce disease incidence and severe outcomes (defined as hospitalization or death) from pertussis infection in infants less than 12 months of age". - Update on Immunization in Pregnancy with Tetanus Toxoid, Reduced Diphtheria Toxoid and Reduced Acellular Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccine
