Abstract

Parents who are influenced by fear-inducing media messages often refuse or hesitate to have their children vaccinated. This choice deprives their children of individual protection and can also lead to reduced collective immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases, paving the way for outbreaks or even epidemics.

Take the time to listen to and understand the parents’ concerns. Assess parents’ knowledge, erroneous beliefs, need for and interest in more information. If parents refuse vaccination, it may be enough to influence their beliefs and encourage them to continue thinking about this issue by referring them to reliable sources for more information.

Discuss the risks of contracting vaccine-preventable diseases and their possible consequences, versus the risks associated with vaccination

Physicians should check children’s vaccine coverage at routine checkups. If parents refuse or hestitate to have their children vaccinated. Take the time to give them information so that they can be better informed
