"There are many steps on the road to an HIV vaccine from basic lab research, to developing a candidate vaccine, to testing it in regulated clinical trials, to finally getting it approved for use and getting it manufactured. Each step in the process can take several years. For example, a vaccine for the Human Papillomavirus took approximately 20 years from initiation to approval for use. CHVI contributed to global efforts to develop an effective HIV vaccine through activities in five main areas: Advancing the Basic Science of HIV Vaccines; Translating Basic Science; Addressing Enabling Conditions; Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV; and Supporting Coordinated Efforts". - Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative Achievements Report
