"This panel discussion explored the issue of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness. The goal of the webinar was to raise awareness about the study and surveillance of vaccine effectiveness, which took place during the World Health Organization’s World Immunization Week, Pan-American Health Organization’s Vaccination Week in the Americas, and Canada’s National Immunization Awareness Week.

According to GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, a partnership between the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, vaccine effectiveness refers to how well a vaccine performs in the real world. Vaccine effectiveness is distinct from vaccine efficacy, which is the degree to which a vaccine prevents disease, and possible transmission, and is determined by comparing a vaccinated group with a placebo group under ideal and controlled circumstances.

How is vaccine effectiveness studied? What is the impact of real-life vaccine effectiveness studies? What vaccine effectiveness surveillance infrastructure exists in Canada? This panel will explore various approaches to researching and surveilling vaccine effectiveness." - Dalla Lana School of Public Health
